New, Safe Procedure Offers Alternative to Liposuction

Bathing suit season is rapidly approaching; are you ready? For those of you who have been exercising and “eating clean,” but have stubborn areas of unwanted adipose, you may want to consider a technology that involves freezing fat. This totally noninvasive procedure, called CoolSculpt, gradually reduces fatty pockets. In good candidates, which generally means non-obese people with localized fatty areas, the procedure can be an alternative to body contouring surgeries, such as liposuction.

CoolSculpting works by cryolipolysis, which is destruction of localized fat cells from the application of a controlled cooling device to the targeted area. The overlying skin is not damaged, and the fat cells are selectively frozen, which causes fat cell death. The fat cells are then eliminated by the body’s natural metabolic processes over the following months. It is a safe procedure with minimal risks.  Research studies have demonstrated that there is not a commiserate rise in blood lipid levels as the fat cells are being eliminated. You see an improvement in contour gradually as the process continues working in the fatty layer underneath the skin.

There are many areas of the body which can be treated. Common troublesome spots include the upper and lower abdomen, the flanks (“muffin tops,”) inner thighs, and outer thighs. Also, the neck under the chin, upper arms, back fat, and bra rolls can be treated. Because of widespread success, more contoured applicators have been made to tailor to various areas of the body and to accommodate different body sizes and shapes.

The CoolSculpting procedure is noninvasive, involves no needles, requires no post-procedure care, and has no down-time. It is performed in a medical office setting, and no anesthesia is required.  The procedure involves a trained technician who applies a skin protective layer and attaches the appropriate handpiece which connects to the CoolSculpt machine. The area feels cold for several minutes and then typically becomes numb for the rest of the procedure. Patients may rest, read, eat, watch television, or work on their computers during the procedure. They may drive to and from the office.

Overall, CoolSculpt is a popular and viable noninvasive alternative to surgical procedures for permanent reduction of stubborn fatty pockets. You may consider a consultation to see if you’re a candidate before the summer season is in full force!
